This year we decided to do things a little differently, instead of a self-catering cottage just to ourselves we decamped to a big hotel on the quay at Weymouth. Quirky is a good word to describe the Crown Hotel; passages on some floors led nowhere, some staircases seemed dead ends, and it proved impossible to walk more than a few metres in a straight line anywhere. Nonetheless, we were treated very well, the food was good and the service even better.

We were also very fortunate, as we turned up unknowing to the biggest free folk festival in the country along with an amazing local art open weekend.

Saturday started with a walk along the Rodwell trail, an old railway line converted to a cycle track, down to Sandsfoot Castle for refreshments.

Sunday followed with a bus ride followed by bracing walk down to Portland Bill for lunch, then back to the hotel to sample the delights of Weymouth. A very different weekend away this year then…
